RACIAL INJUSTICE
As a charity working in the criminal justice sector, we are committed to working to challenge racism and discrimination in the criminal justice system. Research by the charity, Women in Prison, highlights how the criminal justice system disproportionately impacts Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic women, “who comprise 11.9% of the women’s general population in England and Wales, but 20% of the women’s prison population.”
Statistics specify how “some groups of women are particularly overrepresented, most notably Black or Black British women who make up 8.9% of the female prison population, compared to 3% of the general population in England and Wales.”
This overrepresentation is the result of a number of different areas of systemic racism in the criminal justice system. Someone’s experience of justice should not be dependent on the colour of their skin. Our hope and prayer for racial injustice is that we will begin to see long overdue and long-lasting change in the criminal justice system.
